Chris Slattery

Founder, Farmer, Author

Chris Slattery is a mechanical engineer turned farmer/homesteader. Having left the corporate world in 2014 to pursue his dream for a simpler way of living in step with nature, Chris has since been able to apply his unique skill sets to bettering the world of regenerative agriculture. Before settling on a farm of his own, Chris spent over 16 months learning directly from Joel Salatin (renowned farmer, author, speaker, and owner of Polyface Farms) as both an intern and apprentice.

The amalgamation of his love for mechanical design and regenerative agriculture coupled with his hands-on building experience led Chris to team up with Joel Salatin to create a “first of its kind” comprehensive design manual for all of the farm's most iconic infrastructure called Polyface Designs.

As a top seller in its’ genre, Chris’ first publication set a new standard for plan books. Finally, a recipe like approach that simplifies even the most complex homesteading design concepts. His expertise in technical illustration and eye for detail caught the attention of YouTube homesteading sensation @Justin Rhodes. The two have since partnered on a book series, Homestead Builds, that showcase’s the years of development and experimentation on the Rhodes’ family homestead.

Chris and his wife currently reside on their family farm in Kentucky, where they enjoy regenerating the land, and growing happy, healthy livestock. They believe community forms around the dinner table, and enjoy bringing nutritious food to the mouths of those around them. In his free time, Chris is always thinking up new devices or improving upon processes to make day-to-day tasks on the farm more efficient.

Erin Slattery

Wife, Homemaker, Family Nurse Practitioner

Erin Slattery got bit by the farming bug during her years of service as a nurse in the US Navy. Her time as a bedside nurse working in variety of different areas in the hospital left much to be desired to bring truly sustainable, root-cause healing to her patients. Upon discovering the health benefits of regenerative agriculture and functional medicine that all changed. Both reignited her initial love for nursing and brought her caring philosophy into focus. Erin obtained her Family Nurse Practitioner degree with the goal to commit the rest of her career to learning and practicing under a model that treats patients holistically, while addressing the root causes of illness.

Erin is from Carlisle, Pennsylvania but loves her new home in America’s South. She enjoys live music from bluegrass to christian folk, cooking, a good circuit workout, and any outdoor activity – which, since meeting and marrying Chris has turned into caring for all the animals on the farm. Fueled by a passion for her faith and it’s call to responsibly steward God’s creation, Erin’s budding joy and love of homesteading will only continue to grow.

Better taste and quality than anything you can find in the store. I love that I know exactly where my beef is coming from. I have been to the farm and have seen the amazing care the Slattery's but into their animals and their land. You can't beat the price for the quality of the meat you are getting and on top of that, you get to support a family business/local farmer that is doing so much to help make this planet a healthier place! Doesn't get any better!

I'd like to take a moment to share my experiences with Chris Slattery at Cane Valley Farm. I recently became a close neighbor of Chris and Erin's farm- an absolute God sent to use, as we have shared values and goals on our homestead. Chris raises South Pole cattle using a grass rotation system that is second to no one. His cattle see new pasture daily. He also gives them fresh water daily, with the added benefit of mineral salt that has incredible health benefits. His cattle are never given antibiotics and are completely grain free.
Regarding the meat quality, the best. Incredibly tender with the fat taking on the flavor of butter. I've personally never had better; not to mention the incredible health benefits of cattle raised in this manner.
My wife and I would love to fully endorse them as premium beef producers, and if given the privilege of acquiring some, you'd be making a wise decision.

P.S. please leave some for us!!

When you decide to order meat from Cane Valley, upgrade your pellet smoker and let the cooking begin! I recently tried grass-fed beef from Kane Valley Farm after meeting Chris through some acquaintances. I stopped by for a short tour of the farm and some unnecessary stick time on the mini-excavator. I placed an order for a quarter cow, roughly 150lbs after taxes and I really think that is a good entry point for purchasing meat in bulk. A few months later, the meat was ready for pickup and using some giant coolers I shuttled the meat home, inventoried, and filled a 3.5 Cu Ft freezer and then some. Over the past few months I have enjoyed the grass-fed beef and am really impressed with its quality. Now, like everything on the internet, someone always has a stone to throw but just wait until you make your first roast, a thick steak, a massive brisket or some 50/50 burgers because you will never go back to grain fed beef. Go ahead and huck your freezer burned Bubba Burgers in the trash and walk right past the overpriced poor quality meat counter at your local supermarket. Cane Valley Farm is producing meat that contains 2 to 6 times more omega-3 fatty acids than grain-fed beef, which is great for heart health and reducing disease risk. The beef is rich in essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A and E, iron, zinc, and vitamin B12. I love that it's more environmentally friendly, requires less energy to produce, and it supports better animal welfare since the cows are raised in pastures rather than feedlots. The subtle earthy flavor is delightful, and it’s generally juicier too. Overall, it's a fantastic choice for both health and sustainability. If you take away anything from this review, clean out your freezer, clean up your gut, turn off the reporter, order a quarter, and be a supporter.
